I am the Lead Server at Deliteful and in my short time with the company I have learned many things, but nothing more horrifying then the truth about fruit juice! What could be healthier for you than a yummy ice cold glass of juice, right? I mean its squeezed fruit and we’re told that fruit is healthy for you. So what gives?
Fact: Juice contains just as much sugar and calories as a sugary soft drink! I went to my own refrigerator and pulled out the juice I give my kids every day. The label said 100% juice. As I read the label further I discovered that in an 8 oz (240ml) glass of juice there are 28 grams of sugar, 1 gram of protein and 0 grams of fiber. How is that good for you? The small amounts of vitamins and antioxidants that survive the juicing / processing / pasteurization process DO NOT make up for the large amounts of sugar.
Let’s take a look at the nutrition facts printed on the 100% juice label. In one glass (240ml) there is 28g of sugar. Do you know how much sugar 28g is? Well, 1 teaspoon of sugar weights about 4.67 grams so 28 grams is equivalent to 6 teaspoons of sugar. Let that sink in…. 6 teaspoons of sugar in one glass of 100% fruit juice! To give you a quick comparison, there is 41 grams of sugar, 9 teaspoons, in one bottle (330ml) fruit soda which is only a fraction more that the sugar contained in the equivalent serving of 100% fruit juice.
To be honest I used to give my kids at least 3 to 4 cups of juice a day. Eeek! I had no idea of the health risks involved never mind the tooth decay!
The sugar found in fruit juice is called fructose. According to Harvard Medical School, the liver is the only organ that can metabolize fructose in large amounts. When the liver takes in more fructose than it can handle, it turns to fat, this can lead to major health issues, such as childhood diabetes and obesity. The USDA recommends going easy when giving your children juice and give them water or milk instead. Children eat better at meals and snack times when they have not filled up on juice.
Even though juice is very convenient, it is a far less healthy option then a real piece of fruit. The juicing process destroys fruit’s beneficial compounds and antioxidants and removes all the fiber. Without the fiber you are left with what? That’s right SUGAR!!! I have not been able to completely cut juice out of my home, but it is definitely a work in progress.
So, as a server, who’s main aim is to create a great dining experience for each guest, how do I explain that juice is not good to a mom who brings her toddler to Deliteful. How do I impart what I’ve learned as a way to explain why we do not serve fruit juice? Part of our job at Deliteful is to educate the public in making healthier food choices and it all starts with SUGAR!
